Poor Management with bad attitude

My sister and family have been going to NightTown for years. I recently had a late night dinner there with a friend. It was the only place open, that late. I have been several times and each time I promise never to go back, but end up giving them another chance. This time was no exception. I phoned prior to going to be sure they were open. When I arrived, the night manager, a young female was at the host stand having a personal conversation with a friend. I stood at the host sand for 7 minutes and even walked to the kitchen to see if someone would seat me. A server ended up seating me at a table in the dining area off the main bar entrance. We ordered several items off the menu, including a bottle of wine. By the end of the meal, the experience was sub-par with the exception of the food, which was of fair quality. The manager toward the end of the meal was being loud and made several rude comments pertaining to a simple request for espresso. She said, "we don't have any f*&)'in coffee, I threw it out! She then laughed about her comment, with a male patron as we walked by the bar to leave the restaurant. I did not know at the time that the manager was the person at the host stand, who ignored us and did not seat us. Therefore, like a fool I called and requested to speak to a manager. She answered the phone and replied that she was the manager and her name was Jenny. She then laughed and hung up on me... I called back, as I could not believe that she was the manager, and again she hung up the phone on me. The next day I called and requested to speak to Brendan Ring, they said he as out of town. I then requested to speak to his General Manager. A person who said his name was Andrew and said he was the GM, seemed like a nice enough person, he told be that he would handle the issue and get back to me. He never called me back. Therefore, I called him back today. Now he said his name was Adam. He informed me that he did not believe that, the employees that he has worked with for years would ever "do or say anything offensive or malicious to a patron", and that he would have to stand by his employees. To that I say, farewell. In this economic climate, it is good to know when a business does not appreciate a 30% tip and a large check. Good luck Brendan.

Smokey Patio

My entire family love Nighttown. I was disappointed recently having dinner on the patio and discovering that smoking is still permitted there and in the adjacent bar. It may not be in violation of Ohio's new no-smoking law, but it still makes for an unpleasant experience. The patio could be a geat place to eat if smoke-free. Anonymous

crap with a side of CRAP

I arrived at 8:20pm because I had a reservation at 8:30. I was not seated until 9pm. They then sat me finally, but next to the kitchen where all the waiters kept bumping into my chair. Then the waitress took FOREVER to get my order or even bring it. I only got ONE glass of water the whole time. They forgot the dressing to my salad, but by the time they brought it out, I was done. I went to hear the jazz music, but they took a 40 minute break during my meal, so I ended up only hearing 10 minutes of playtime. When we asked for our check, it took 25 minutes to get it. We did not leave until midnight!!! I have NEVER had such poor service or attention in my entire life. I wouldn't recommend my dog to this place. At least the ppl there were cute.

Love Nightown

I happened to find this website and was shocked @ what was being said about Nighttown. I have dined there for many years. What makes this place great is that it's low key and you can dress down or up your choice. You can have steak or a simple burger. I have never have bad service there infact just the opposite. They have gone out of their ways to accomadate me for special events like a celbration of a birthday. For those of you who have "quote had bad service" I find it hard to believe the staff and owner will go out of their way to meet all of your needs. Yes you have to deal with crowds when you go there because it is such a great place to go and that is why there is noise and people in there. I have been going there since I was child and now as an adult and will continue. To the owner and staff I want to thank you for great food and service each and everytime.

The Good & the Bad

I like Nighttown. The food is decent, the unassuming atmosphere is what I grew up with and prefer, and the music is good. But although I don’t like pretension, I dislike clueless service backed by whining even more. Brenden Ring’s weigh-in on this forum was nice. The comments made by Whiney Server were not. I worked my way through college waiting tables. Most people know that servers deal with a daily 4-hour crush of moods & personalities in a loud, hot, often smoky (but usually interesting) work place. Many servers provide good service under pressure (they act professionally) and are teamed with chefs who do the same, unseen. Patrons usually sense this polished, determined teamwork and respond with emotional and financial appreciation. On the other hand, it’s an eye-rolling experience to see Whiney Server lash out at a customer and defend exasperating service with personal problems. Tacky. In a competitive business, Nighttown’s been around for decades. Thanks for your grace under pressure, Brenden.

No Need to Appologize, Nighttown

As a former Nighttown employee, it angers me and saddens me to no end that a customer (or rather "former customer") would be so callous enough as to defame and ridicule a fellow server on a blog-site like this. You obviously have no concept of the challenges beset on the waitstaff at such an enterprising venue. You obviously have no sensitivity to such a server who is a single mother, supporting herself through Nighttown as she tries to promote her education and ameliorate her life. Furthermore, Brendan Ring is a superlative boss and an accomodating host to his loyal cadre of customers. Many of his waitstaff have been on board for over a decade. The professionally-trained kitchen team is highly-skilled and very adept at what they do. The jazz is always world-class. There is no need to publicly shame people who go to work every day (as I assume you do) and try to do their very best despite whatever challenges that may surface. At the end of the day, it's just dinner and a jazz show. And it couldn't be all that bad or the joint wouldn't have lasted 40+ years. Bravo Nighttown, Brendan and Crew. Keep up the good work.

Apologies from Nighttown

I'd like to address the concerns raised by a few reviewers on this website. Nighttown is the only jazz club in Ohio listed in Down Beat's 100 Best Jazz Clubs in the World. It's fairly common for a nationally-known artist to play a gig in New York City, Chicago or L.A. and then appear shortly thereafter at Nighttown - and we never have a minimum food or beverage charge. We are very proud of our jazz/cabaret lineup. That said, we are also aware that from time to time the noise from our bar and adjoining dining room can migrate into the music room. We do our best to minimize that, but sometimes it's difficult. Some day, I hope our music room can be reconfigured to eliminate extraneous sounds. But in the meantime, we ask for your patience; we hope that the intimacy of seeing your favorite national artist in a small room outweighs the other difficulties posed by the room; and we very much appreciate the support Cleveland audiences have given us since we opened in 1964. Regarding mention on this website of substandard service, please accept my apologies. Should this ever happen again, please let me or one of my managers know about the situation immediately. We've won many awards from Cleveland Magazine, Northern Ohio Live, Scene, The Free Times, SBN and others and we've won those awards for our great service, food, music, outdoor dining area and overall excellence. We take complaints very seriously. Regarding the person who said he was served a fried salmon steak. We have never served such an item. Regardless, we are in the business of making our guests happy. If you're not happy with our food or service, please ask for me. And if I'm not here (though I often am), my managers are more than happy to rectify the situation. For full information about Nighttown, please check out our website at www.nighttowncleveland.com. And for compliments and complaints, please call us directly at 216-795-0550. Sincerely, Brendan Ring, Owner Nighttown

WhatTown?

NightTown is a unique place with atmosphere and a nice bar to grab a drink. However, it is not the best venue for live music. This is unfortunate, because it seems to be the only place to see serious jazz talent in Cleveland. NightTown has an overpriced, uninspired menu with lousy service for sure, but I'm reviewing the room as a live music experience. Many aspects of the establishment seem to be trying too hard (and failing miserably) to be high-class. In the back there is a small and very intimate room where you can see excellent jazz talent up close, but the venue falls short of acceptable in so many ways. It's amazing they have been around so long as a popular music venue. There are only tables for seating and you will need to make reservations or get there very early (and eat) if you don't want a table in the back. There is a mere curtain that partitions the bar and it's noisy patrons from the room and they can be easily heard during the performance. Unless you are in the front tables you will likely only see the heads of the performers because the room has a flat floor and the "stage" is just a very short riser. Luckily, the acoustics of the room are one of the best aspects of the venue and your ears will be happy since they use little amplification. Perhaps you are better off joining the revelers at the bar and foregoing the lousy room, because you won't have to buy a ticket or dinner and you can easily hear the show thru the curtain.

Bad service

My husband and I went here last night (3/18) and had what possibly could be the worst waitress around (Elizabeth). Indifferent is a perfect word to describe her. Not only that, but she messed up our order twice and never apologized. Because of her, we will never go back. The jazz trio was excellent though.

Jazz Entertainment Great! Food Service Terrible.

My guest and I really enjoyed the sounds of Jazz Recording Artist Bill Ransom. The Club was filled with friends of the Artist and we all enjoyed that aspect of the evening. The food was good but the service left a lot to be desired. Our waitress seemed indifferent to giving us service and was seldom available to attend to our needs. Maybe it is because the 20% gratuity was included in the bill and there is no need to render service with a smile. At first I thought it was isolated to just our table until I had an opportunity to talk with others in attendance and they echoed the same complaints. I hope that the owner reviews this so adjustments can be made to ensure that customers of NightTown receive an all around good experience.

Best spot in town!

Night Town is the ideal place for those seeking great food and smooth jazz from talented musicians reciting artists such as George Benson and Miles Davis.

NightTown--Cleveland's Best Supper Club

Nowhere else in Cleveland can you enjoy a Dublin Lawyer while catching live tunes from famous jazz cats like Wynton Marsalis and Dominic Farinacci. NightTown's owner Brendan Ring makes the experience a true delight with his witty presence and keen attention to detail. The waitstaff is always courteous professional and should I mention that a good number of them have been there for quite time; a solid indictation that NightTown treats its employees well. Overall if you haven't dropped into this incredible place you're missing out on something very unique.
