Bummer My party of 6, all from out of town, never sat down to enjoy a very much anticipated meal here on a recent Saturday evening. I had reservations for our mini family renunion/birthday celebration 2 weeks ahead of time per my daughter's request (lives in VT). When we all arrived at our reservation time I was told we in fact did not have a reserved table, we were not on the list at all. I was quite upset. The hostess brought over the manager who questioned my integrity, questioned my memory, & humiliated me in front of my family and the room full of diners. After that appalling/stressed out behavior he did make a call to Bruno's, we were seated in a private space there and very well cared for, and Momocho had ordered for us a couple appetizers to enjoy as well, which was very nice, AND the evening turned out fine. But still, the experience at Momocho was not good. I frequently dine out and I doubt I will go here again. Light Bistro rocks, go there! Berea 4/14/2008 Best Mexican In Cleveland Ok so yes, the service is on the slow side, but man is it worth it. The slogan is "mod mex" and they mean it. I normally am bored by all "traditional" Mexican restaurants but this place is astounding. Their guacamole is unbelievable, they transformed a normally boring side (at all other places but Chipotle at least) into a must-order item. Their tequila flight is also recommended, if a bit pricey. We also ordered two sets of taquitos and the fried ice cream, all of which as astounding. I will definitely go back often. Cleveland 3/15/2008 The Best! Having lived in South Florida for a number of years and loving the food down there, it was great to come back home to discover Momocho. The food is so fresh and the flavors are combined so perfectly.... and the service is great! If you want the best alcoholic beverage in town, order your Tecate Michelada style.....and if you want the best food in town, order ANYTHING on the menu! Willoughby 5/2/2007 Best in the City! Hand downs - the best restaurant in the city. The setting, decor, and vibe reminds me of the great city of Austin, TX. If you are looking for Chi-Chi's or Taco Hell - please, go elsewhere. They don't serve Gorditas or Nachos Bel Grande here. Thank the Lord! Cleveland 5/1/2007 Regular Guy I have been to Momocho's at least twice a month since it opened. I obviously like the place or I would not keep going back. The margaritas are the best. Bar none. The new one made from cucumber is so refreshingly good. Of the 30 or so times I have been there I have ordered the lamb chops at least half the time. The lamb is seasoned perfectly. Order it medium rare and you get medium rare. The new shrimp dish with the cauliflower-hominy cake and sofrito is amazing. Shrimp cooked to perfection – not at overcooked by a moment. Recently they created this dessert made with coconut rice pudding, blue berries and lime juice – It’s like a stolen kiss of sweetness that leaves you wanting just a little more. Thanks for months of consistently great food. The Westside Reviewer Lakewood 3/19/2007 from the chef anyone who has eaten at momocho knows our quality, standards, and service are far greater than this. hopefully readers will not be jaded by one false account and will come to experience momocho for what it truly is. viva mexico! eric from cleveland 2/18/2007 great great place GREAT FOOD, Great Service, the nicest staff I have ever been served by. Just the right mix of spice for me. and it is great to find a mex place that doesn't keep kicking the same dead horse, food wise. just tried the new Cuke-arita (cucumber margarita) yumm with the lime/pepper salt good mix of tunes too. lakewood 2/18/2007 WOULD NEVER GO BACK The service was the WORST I have ever experienced. Some of my party was exactly on time for our 6 pm reservations - two others were twenty minutes late. The host almost refused to seat us! Then after seating us, he interrupted our dinner (not yet finished - had just ordered new drinks and was contemplating dessert) and told us that we had to leave because he "needed the table." He interrupted again a few minutes later and stood there until we left! We paid our check and on the way out - I told the owner what happened. I thought he would be appalled, but he actually said, "What do you want me to do about it?" Unbelievable. I HATED the entrees. I liked the guac and the margaritas were ok (but not nearly as good as Luchitas). I will never go back there again, and I am encouraging everyone I know not to subject themselves to such a horrific dining experience. Rocky River 2/15/2007 hooray for momocho Great food. Gives Frontera Grill in chicago a run for its money. Way better than Lopez. The cactus margaritas are fantastic, as was the guac sampler. Pepita crusted trout, lamp chops, chicken chimis, all great. coffe/chocolate smoked beef taquitas so dry it had to go back (staff was very gracious). Lime coconut rice pudding? yuummmmmm. A little too noisy for comfort, but overall a great experience. Great place to take out of towners to show that we do have one or two good ones. cleveland 1/21/2007 ummmm-azing i have never been moved to review a restaurant in my life before -- and i would say that i've eaten at most of cleveland's "it" places -- but my experience at momocho the other night deserves to be spoken of and praised. i don't know anything about the place (who owns it, who designed it, who the chef is, etc.) but whoever is running that show deserves all of accolades momocho has gotten thus far. great, great atmosphere, from the lighting to the music to the decor -- very sexy, fun and intimate. the service was absolutely fantastic. (we had no reservation and the place was pretty busy, so we weren't expecting much service-wise, but the blondish chick knew her stuff and took great care of us. and the gentleman working the front door was one of the warmest "hosts" i've met.) the margaritas from the bar were top notch. and then the food... i don't even know what to say. there guacamoles you can't even believe until you taste them; a chile relleno i would put up against any in the world; perfectly rich and spicy carnitas; the best lamb chops in the city by far (usually served with spinach, we lucked out with a special substitution -- for obvious reasons -- of fantasic garlic-y mustard greens); a trout dish so original and exciting and delicious i don't even really know how to describe it. there's many other great sounding things on the menu that i can't wait to try. the restaurant is small and the menu isn't very big either, but they have certainly made the most of space restrictions. it honestly feels like one of those spots you'd discover and fall in love with in chicago or NYC -- those places you eat at and constantly say, "man, i wish there was a place like this in cleveland." well now there is. just spectacular updated mexican food, perfect service, and a hip but friendly atmoshpere that i can't wait to enjoy again and again. cleveland 9/22/2006 cool place unique and creative mexican food-lamb chops and chillaquilas-maragritas, cool atmosphere, and good service. love the bathrooms and the aveda soap. david from rocky river 9/19/2006 No Mexicans Wow went there with a good budy and heard about this place. We entered and its was like i was back in the Old fulton bar. Decore is the same except the Mexican religious candles. Any way my buddy and i entered to only be served by white people at Mexican joint. hmmmmm..... Well any way i think we were the only Mexicans in the joint. Food is good but lacks the spice of a true Mexican cook. Ever been to a chinese rest. and every working there is black or hispanic? never seen it. Good try i like the environment and people are friendly but nothing special for Ohio city but hell of alot better than Johnny Mangos! Pancho Villa from Cleveland 9/5/2006 Awesome. Crisp service, and the food was amazing. Octopus salad was just right, the guacs are amazing, and the smoked trout chilaqueles (did I spell that right?) were amazing! My buddy had the tuna and it was great. I will be back. Tonight, in fact. Overall, a fantastic experience. Lakewood 8/11/2006 best mex closest place to frontera grill as we've seen. unique and fun mexican food, service and atmosphere. a real ohio city gem. kate from westlake 7/16/2006 Surprisingly Disappointed My wife and I, are both fans of Lopez; so when we found out about Momocha being that of a former Lopez chef, we were excited to try it out. We came out on a Thrusday night, and was seated upstairs. I found the decor to be quirky, yet intimate. However the meal, at least, my meal left room for improvement. I had the Chicken Chop, which I found to be somewhat bland, but moist, and the side dish of tamale dumplings were quite appetizing, like charcoal covered miniballs of bread mush. Not to be petty, but I also feel worth noting, in mexican restaurants, I am accustomed to complimentary chips and salsa, for which we charged here. The margaritas seemed to be overly fruity, more like a virgin drink. However, not all was a bust, for my wife did rather enjoy her entree, Smoked Trout + Crab Chilaquiles. Her entree being the saving grace here, will be our reason to give Momocha another shot. We are looking forward to sitting at the bar next time. J S from cleveland 7/9/2006 twice as nice second time in and the place gets better. our server kevin (hottie!!!)was the best. love the goat cheese guacamole and cactus margaritas. best place in the west. westlake 7/8/2006 loud, loud, loud we had a chance to experience momocho last saturday night and were pleasently surprised. perfect service, spectacular food, especially the smoked trout guacamole and the lamb chops; and the patio was jumpin'. cool music, but too loud for us. we'll be back on a weekday. rocky river 6/1/2006 great new place great new space in ohio city and great concept. we love mexican and so we've been to momocho 5 times already. awesome guacamole and margaritas. they play cool modern music and the place looks great. highly recommend for a crazy girls night out!!! cleveland 5/24/2006 Great Guac, killer tunes Met the chef, ate the food, enjoyed the atmosphere that includes killer music, crusifixes and cool light fixtures just to name a few. Katie from Lakewood 5/19/2006 What's with the gun? Why is there a gun in Momocho's advertising? Cleveland (Ohio City) 5/12/2006 awesome new spot all i've heard about is momocho, momocho, momocho from my ohio city friends. no way it could live up to all the hype. well i was so wrong! this place is awesome. the pomegranate margaritas are the best and the guacamole sampler we shared was amazing. we split the carnitas tacos and finished with a chocolate cake that had a warm spicy chocolate sauce. the place looks cool and sexy and plays the best music. i highly recommend momocho but call first...it was very busy. cleveland 4/28/2006 Holy Guac! I heard about this place opening and went for drinks after work to Ohio City. Wow! I ended leaving 4 hours later. They have EXCELLENT guacamole and it comes in a couple different flavor mixings. I had a basic mexican beer and then the bartender talked me into having it "chilua"? style which was ice, salt, worchester and tabasco. It tasted very good, even though it sounds very strange. High recommendation to visit. Cleveland 4/26/2006 Exquisite! I had been anticipating my Friday evening reservations @ Momocho since I found out that Fulton Bar and Grill was sold and being converted into this modern mexican restaurant. Everything was delicious. The wait staff was a little stretched due to them just having opened on Thursday, however the flavorful margaritas packed a serious punch and the guacamole and enchiladas were tremendous! The decor is somewhat similar to that of the Fulton Bar & Grill, however I think there was alot more thought put into the colors, paintings and pieces adorning the walls. This is a fabulous place to stop by for an evening cocktail and a side of guacamole or to sit out on the patio and indulge all evening.
