Lola is now open in its new location in Downtown Cleveland's hot new East 4th neighborhood. Lola is run by celebrity chef Michael Symon. It is the sister restaurant to Lolita in Tremont. The restaurant has a large wine selection and dress is business casual.
We saw Lola on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" and decided to try it when we were in town for a wedding. It was every bit as good as it seemed on the show! Our server was very gracious and the food was terrific. If you want meat done right, this is the place. And although I'm not the most adventurous person when it comes to food, the vanilla ice cream with bacon bits was a treat! The only bummer? Not seeing Chef Michael's pig tattoo in person. San Diego 11/3/2007 Very Very Good, but only for special occasions! My new husband and I got married yesterday morning and decided to splurge yesterday night at Lola's since we'd heard so much about it. Now, many of the things people have said were on the menu weren't on the menu when we were there. The prices were in the $22 - $30 range. We started with drinks (Hey, we didn't have a wedding, so we ordered EVERYTHING.). He had the Great Lakes Dortmunder, which is his favorite anyway, and I had the Coffee and Cream. The Coffee and Cream was good, but it tasted just like Bailey's Irish Cream liquor so it's probably not worth the price ($10). We got the Cured Tuna appetizer ($12). It was certainly very good, but way too small. Plus, since there were five, we had to try and cut one apart to split it. Silly thing to mention, but it makes a difference. I couldn't taste the saffron in it either, which was disappointing to me. (I had GREAT tuna at Pacific East on Coventry, by the way, so every time I've had it since then I've been disappointed.) For the main course I had the duck ($23) which was amazing. It tasted like no duck I'd aver eaten before. The picked cherries were an odd but perfect pairing. I must learn to cook duck breast like that! The portion of the main course was definitely adequate for me. I had some trouble finishing it, as I'm a person who usually eats small portion sizes at home. I HAD to finish it, though, since I knew I wouldn't be able to reheat it properly. My husband had the Beef Hanger Steak ($26) which was also really really amazing. I tried some and the meat just melts in your mouth. He also felt that he'd eaten plenty and was stuffed. He also ordered the wild mushroom side, which, to be honest, reminded me of my grandpa's mushrooms with less butter. They weren't especially special, except for making me think of Grandpa. I didn't notice the over salting that other people seem to have observed. We also got the dessert, despite the fact that I felt I couldn't eat another bite. We had the 6 am special ($9). It was really good, but I think I could make it just as tasty at home. The bacon blended with the ice cream quite nicely, but it was very small. (which might have been a good thing.) All and all, it was a good experience. After we got the bill, we decided it might be a once every 10 anniversaries kind of place to go. :) Granted, I don't think we needed to order as much as we did. The main course alone would have been more than enough. I didn't enjoy the sides and appetizers as much, anyway. I had been become cynical before I bit into the duck, that I'd find it that special or interesting. Cleveland 11/3/2007 Fantastic X Six Six of us dined at this wonderful restaurant on October 20, 2007. All six of us commented on the excellent quality of the food - from starters that included perfectly prepared rare tuna, French bean soup, fried sweetbreads, and apple & pear salad - to fantastic entrees of braised short ribs, duck breast & duck confit, striped bass, and rabbit. The meal was superb - in both presentation and taste. Our bill, including coctails & a couple bottles of wine was less than expected - about 150 USD, with tip. Thank you Michael Symon & staff for a great dining experience! Jon Prochnow from Stow 10/21/2007 Best in Cleveland - hands down. Best food in Cleveland, hands down. Beautiful rotating menu. Perfectly seasoned. Despite reviews above, I tasted no abundance of salt during any of my 4 visits. Service and deco equally incredible. People who complain about portion size should go to Longhorn or Applebee's. rocky river 9/18/2007 Rosemary The secret ingredient in their fries is rosemary! Anonymous 6/13/2007 the best if there is a better restaurant in cleveland i havent been there. The venison was the best i have ever had and the foie gras sausage was a dream. Dont understand the negative reviews unless they are fans of longhorn steakhouse. Worth every penny!!! Chef Symon is a genius jim bowles from cleveland 2/18/2007 Fun at the bar My friend from NY was visiting and we had wine and appetizers at the bar. Service and quality of food and wine was good. The appetizers were as good as any NY restaurant-they made me want to come back for dinner soon to really see what the Chef can do. shaker 2/12/2007 Mixed Blessing Overall, the food was delicious, yet way too heavy on the salt, which was quite surprising for a restaurant of this calibre. The sturgeon was outstanding; hangar steak great but way too salty. All the sauces had too much salt. The waitress was great. The decor fun and trendy. I hope they taste their own food and improve it a bit. Kent, OH 1/12/2007 Don't buy the hype Don't be star struck by the owner, don't buy the hype of quasi-informed local critics and don't be stupid enough to "give" your money away by eating here. I, too, am well traveled and have dined at some of the finest restaurants across the U.S. and was thoroughly disappointed at the quality of the food, the prices and the service. For a mere $7, you can be teased with what the menu describes as a Bibb salad - the dressing was very good, but spread over five small lettuce leaves is a joke - rabbits would starve at that rate! The venison was prepared quite nicely (medium rare) and the portion was sufficient, but at $31, could I have at least been given a full serving of vegetable rather than the julienned air? Friends ordered the Rib Eye and indicated the meat ruined by the incredibly salty mushroom sauce. However, they did get fries and that was a good thing. At $37 for a Rib Eye and fries, the price of potatoes must have skyrocketed recently. We all split an apple tart at the end of the meal for $9 and had a hard time even finding three bits! Perhaps one of the most annoying parts of the dining experience is the wavy silverware - it looks really cool, but incredibly impractical because we all had a difficult time holding the fork and knife because they wouldn't stay in one place...I was actually ready to ask our server for chopsticks, but she already seemed to be in a horrible mood that night! Overall, the restaurant was a huge disappointment. Cleveland knows quality and we're willing to pay for value. Please don't assume your patrons are inexperienced diners...those who keep coming back are the same ones who tell their friends their salary, name drop and feel important when they get "voted" into Who's Who - what a joke. Rocky River 1/9/2007 Waste of Time, Waste of Money I consider myself well traveled and well versed in fine dining. This restaurant is a JOKE!!!! Can this restaurant be any worse???? First of all they lure you into the restaurant and do not warn you they are about to steal your money by offering a limited menu ridicously priced. FIRST!!!!! $100 per person is a joke. So after you point out that you were not told about pricing during reservations or confirmation you and the guests are offered a seconday menu. The first clue to the horrible food is the abundance of SALT on, in and around everything! Apparently the chef has not figured out FLAVOR and chooses to cover the food in SALT for taste. Back to the secondary menu...$42 for a 1.5 lb lobster that really is only 4 oz is a complete scam, watch out for the Sweet Potato Gnocchi...you would think they would provide $40 worth of Gnocchi since they just gave you $2 worth of lobster...but think again. No sort of Chef explaination can do it justice...Oh and the waitstaff is not even courteous enough to warn you that the meal cannot feed a small child let alone a full grown adult. We skipped dessert since we were now guessing that Strawberries meant more than ONE but Slim ODDS that there would be more than TWO. On the plus side, the ONLY item of value were the drinks...if you enjoy PURE alcohol and no flavor...you are gonna need it just to get through the meal and accept the check. Cleveland 1/1/2007 What did your say? Great expectations, not met! Tables for two jammed together, noise level so loud could not hear, menu too heavy on meat, of the four seafood selections, three had meat additions-sausage, bacon, and oxtail broth. Food o.k., not great. On the plus side, it is visually stunning. Loved the old Lola and adore Lolita. bay village 12/3/2006 Lola finally opens I've been waiting for lola on east 4th to open for quite awhile. We made reservations on a Wednesday for Friday night and there were only two spots open for dinner that evening. The basics on Lola: Lots of beautiful people, don't worry too much about the dress, make reservations, expect to pay a lot, don't expect the fastest service and try their steaks. And if anyone can figure out what's on their french fries, let me know. I think they're spritzed with rose water... Cleveland 10/14/2006 stunning!!! after all the waiting we were happy to finally be able to eat at LOLA. the space is beautiful and the food and service is equally amazing. mike, liz and the entire staff are off to a terrific opening. we can't wait to go again...the bacon appetizer are what dreams are made of. eric from cleveland 10/11/2006 Post your own review of this venuePlease take a look at our guidelines for help and our disclaimer.
