The Best in Cleveland Last night I was walking around downtown and happened upon Jac's. It was the best food I've talked coming out of Cleveland. The Rissotto and Herb Grill Chicken were wonderful. The server Dave was very attentive and made wonderful recommedations- including the wine pairing. I plan on coming back often and you should visit! Kim S from Cleveland 3/16/2008 Awesome - a gem waiting to be found ! My wife and I had dinner at Jac's on Saturday based on the recommendation of the concierge at The Marriott. WOW ! We were there very early (5:00) and the place was very quiet. Our server (Dave) was cheerful and eager to please. Peter the Chef (owner also ?) met with us before we ordered and made some suggestion - all right on! The brie wrapped in speck was incredible as were the Sea Scallops and the Pan Roasted Chicken with parmesan potatoes (Peter said 'The Best CHicken you've ever eaten - and he was right !) I would highly recommend this restaurant !! BTW - We ate at Lolas the night before - Jac's food is every bit as good and (at least when we were there) we could hear each other ! David Snyder from PA 4/30/2007 HORRIBLE experience I’d like to preface this all by saying that I am a resident of the Warehouse District and, in fact, live on the corner of West 6th Street and St. Clair Avenue. I had always wanted to try Jac’s as it is a local restaurant and I am a big fan of supporting restaurants and businesses downtown—particularly in my neighborhood. I met a group of 5 or 6 people at Jac’s at 5:30pm to discuss a charity event that we are planning to support a local nonprofit. Upon arriving, 2-3 people already had drinks in hand – a couple of others did not. My fiancée approached the bartender and asked if she could order a Hamburger. He asked her what drinks were needed and after she let him know that nobody at the time needed a drink, he rolled his eyes and told my fiancée that “Jac’s is a restaurant and not a meeting place.” Of course, my fiancée was attempting to order a meal – and admittedly, not everybody in the group was. Of course, the entire restaurant was empty except for 2-3 people at the bar and 1 other couple seated at a table. After an hour passed, the meeting concluded and the meal that my fiancée ordered was never served. We approached the bartender and asked why he had not brought out our meal – and he insisted that my fiancée never ordered her meal. In fact, he was very confrontational and instead of apologizing for any confusion – he continued to assert that my fiancée was simply lying. My fiancée approached the owner of the establishment to let him know that the bartender had been quite rude – and the owner refused to look away from his meal and brushed her off by saying that the bartender told him the story and that he wished the bartender had kicked us out of the restaurant. We told the owner we would never be back – and he only laughed and said that he hoped we never would come back. In retrospect, had the bartender and/or owner simply acknowledged that there must have been some confusion and apologized – I would not be writing this email. In fact, I may have even planned to go back at some point to try some menu items. Had our group been actively approached even once by a server offering menu items, perhaps we would have been convinced to order more appetizers and meals. In short, the customer service at Jac’s was not simply poor – but offensive and confrontational. We walked out of Jac’s feeling frustrated, upset – and insisted that we would let everybody know about our experience. I visit white-cloth restaurants downtown quite often -- this was by far the worst experience I've ever had. Please remember this story when considering which downtown restaurants to visit in the future. Warehouse District -- Cleveland 4/26/2007 Shhhh! Jac's is still a secret. Went to Jac's last Friday night. Simply incredible food. The meal was definitely in the top 10 in Cleveland. Everything was perfectly prepared. Service has definitely improved since they first opened. I don't think we could have had a better wait staff. I really appreciated the Chef coming out and greeting the guests personally. Nice touch. Surprisingly it wasn't packed. I don't thing the word is out yet. They had a soft open last year and haven't really hit the summer season. Take advantage of this gem while the reservations are easy to get. Chris Caputo from Avon Lake 3/8/2007 Food as Art I just tried Jac's for the first time last night and will definitely be back. For appetizers we had the "small plates" : baked goat cheese, a house salad, and roasted shrimp. In addition to being delicious, they were visual works of art. For dinner I had the "medium plate" walnut salad - a wonderful combination of field greens, gorgonzola, rasberries, the most delicate pear slices I have ever seen, and an unusually moist and tasty grilled chicken breast. Again - visually a work of art. Decent wine list and generous martinis. Great NYish kind of atmosphere - sleek and simple - very cool. And the most attentive waiter I have ever had. We also got a visit from the chef inquiring on how we liked the food. How is it possible that they are getting it right on all accounts and aren't packed on a Friday night? Bobbi Reichtell from Cleveland 1/20/2007 Great Food, OK Service We went to Jac's on a saturday night about 7 pm. The dining room/bar had 10 people at most when we walked in. We were greeted by a cheerful host and seated at our large, circular "booth" table. However, it was about 5 minutes before any server even came over to greet us and upon arriving gave an excuse as to why we waited so long. We decided on a few small plates and medium plates. The server never brought any bread in addition our neighbors received their food first, despite us arriving a good 10 minutes before they did. When the food arrived it was beautifully presented and flavorful. However the server came over only once after dropping off the food. The chef came out to see how to the food was and was very friendly. I definately think that Jac's has a nice niche in the W. 6th and W.9th district so long as they increase customer service. Willoughby Hills 11/15/2006 Great food; great ambiance My husband and I needed to relax one weeknight after work, so we headed down to Jac's for dinner. The food was absolutely divine. We ordered a few medium plates (the restuarant offers a range of sizes from small plates to full entrees) so we could sample different items. The scallops were sweet and delicious, cooked in a sauce with chorizo sausage which provided an excellent blend of tastes. We also had the mini hamburgers which are gourmet versions of our favorite White Castle burgers but made with high quality beef and shaved pickles. Presentation of the food was elegant and creative, plus the dishes, flatware, and glassware were lovely. I never had such a beautiful wine glass in my life! The decor was classy, chic, and sophisticated and the ambiance was relaxed. The service couldn't have been better. The chef came out to meet us, and to make sure we were enjoying the meal. To top things off, the coffee was freshly brewed to perfection, just what we needed after such a satisfying meal. I highly recommend Jac's. I'm sure it will become a downtown favorite. Shaker Heights 10/20/2006 Stylish New Spot Jac's is fabulous! Not only is it a sophisticated, stylish place for after-work get-togethers, but the food is out of this world! My husband and I have eaten here three times, and each has been outstanding. Both the chef and the general manager stopped by our table to see how we enjoyed our evening. The wine list is reasonably priced, and the suggestions we received from waitstaff were right on. The pan roasted chicken with parmesan potatoes was to die for! The chicken had a crispy, well seasoned crust, and was juicy inside. The parm potatoes appeared to have been put through a ricer, and had just the right amount of cheese. The shrimp appetizer was also great, but be warned -- you only get one shrimp! Even though it's a large one, I'd order at least two. The interior is beautifully furnished and comfortable. I love the banquettes in the bar area, and the more formal dining area has just the right ambience. Cleveland 10/17/2006 Jac's Fantastic I just read the review on Jac's and found it hysterical in the sense that someone obviously has a vendetta. I was at Jac's on the same evening and found the place smoothered with patrons as any new spot would hope to gather such a crowd. The bartenders I thought were friendly and the drinks great. I began my evening with friends in the lounge and then had a wonderful dinner on the more formal side of Jac's. I have never dined in any restaurant (and I am very picky) where the chef actually brought the food to the table and checked back in a short moment to ensure our satisfaction. The service was prompt and I felt the prices very affordable. I can't understand the other person's point of view and while I respect their opinion, I would only hope that as Clevelanders we would wish any new establishment success and not hope for one to be closed down. Isn't that the problem we have had for years with Cleveland? The flats are gone. We need our Warehouse. Most impressive to me other than the food was the size and decor of the place. A friend of mine visiting from Santa Monica noted upon our arrival that he did not think Cleveland had anything like this. I plan to take all my visiting friends there. Good luck to Jac's and all the establishments in the warehouse. As for the hostess out front....if all the women in Cleveland looked like her, we would make the top ten list of most beautiful people instead of top ten for poverty. But poverty is what we can expect if we do not support our new friends as well as old ones. Thanks for listening. Adam adam o'connell from cleveland 7/29/2006 Stay Away... I recently visited Jac's on a Friday night for a happy hour. Greeting the patrons outside on the sidewalk were what appeared to be the manager and the hostess. The reason why they were both outside in the 86 degree heat and humidity became apparent upon entering. The inside temperature was considerably and uncomfortably hotter and stickier. There must have been around 250 people inside for this happy hour event which I'm sure didn't help the interior climate. Looking around only about one of every five people actually had drinks in hand. The reason for this became painfully clear when attempting to purchase a drink. The planners of this event may or may not have conveyed that there could be a considerable number of people attending. The bar had a total of four people serving drinks. This crew accomplished two things: 1) make every patron feel completely ignored and unserviced 2) frantically moving around a whole lot without actually serving drinks. Taking over 20 minutes to wait to get a (simple) drink is insulting. The only thing I saw the manager do to help with the log jam of patrons was empty out the larger bills from the cash register. Logically only serving drinks to around 20% of your patrons sounds like a missed revenue opportunity. Well if you charge twice as much you can serve half as much which is what they did charging around $5 for a beer and around $8 for a mixed drink. It's amazing how good a revoltingly hot and humid Cleveland night feels after stepping out of that price-gouging sauna. My experience there was pretty darn bad. I sincerely hope it closes down and someone else opens a new spot as Jac's is a delusional embarrassment to the City of Cleveland.
